Can you install on a Victorian terrace in Colchester?

Yes, with some extra care. Slate roofs need the right hooks and flashings, party-wall scaffolding needs neighbour liaison, and if the house is in a conservation area the panels should not be on a slope facing the street unless it is unavoidable. We check all of this at survey.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

On most houses in England, roof-mounted solar is permitted development and no application is needed, provided the panels do not project more than 200mm from the roof slope and the property is not a listed building. Flats, listed buildings and some conservation-area situations are different. We check your property's status as part of the survey and tell you before you commit.

Will you handle the paperwork with the electricity network?

Yes. We submit the G98 notification or G99 application to UK Power Networks, provide the commissioning certificates you need for a Smart Export Guarantee tariff, and register the installation on the relevant databases.

How quickly can you come out?

Surveys across Essex are usually booked within a week or two of your enquiry. Installation dates depend on the time of year, scaffold availability and any DNO approval needed for larger systems — we give you a realistic date in the quotation.

Roofs and housing in Colchester

Georgian and Victorian terraces in the centre, inter-war suburbs, and extensive 2000s–2020s new-build at Stanway and Myland; coastal cottages and bungalows at Wivenhoe and Mersea. We size the system to your actual roof and consumption at survey — never from a postcode.

Planning permission in Colchester

Colchester includes a designated conservation area. Roof-mounted panels are still usually permitted development there, but the rules are tighter — panels on a wall or roof slope facing a highway may need permission, and listed buildings always need listed building consent. We confirm your property's status with Colchester City Council before quoting.

Grid connection

UK Power Networks is the distribution network operator for the whole of Essex. We handle the G98 notification (systems up to 3.68kW per phase) or G99 application (larger systems and most batteries) on your behalf.

BlankSolar is fully insured and MCS-certified. We also install across the wider United Kingdom — contact us if your property is outside Colchester.

System size

Choosing a solar system size

BlankSolar installs packages from 2kW to 6kW, and larger systems where the roof and supply allow it. Size should follow the property, not a default package.
